PCT Day 67... Comfort

PCT Day 67... Comfort

I woke up just before my alarm to a stunning site. The view from where I lay was awesome, with the valley cast in shadow as the sun was rising. With a view like that to wake up to, it reminded me of one of the reasons I came out here…

PCT Day 66... Castle Crags Wilderness

PCT Day 66... Castle Crags Wilderness

From where I camped, it was a five mile downhill hike to the highway to get into town. It only took me about an hour and a half to cover that distance. It was really just an access road for the highway. When I arrived, there was another guy waiting for his friends…

PCT Day 62... Looking Forward

PCT Day 62... Looking Forward

Before I hit the sack, I did some thinking. I am almost positive that I will not be able to finish the trail this summer although I will get extremely close.  I expect I will be just a week or two short on time. My goal is to get as far as possible to the end.

PCT Day 55... Will Hike for Food

PCT Day 55... Will Hike for Food

Packing up camp took even less time than yesterday, thanks to not having any tent to pack away. I got out of camp in less than 20 minutes after getting up. I started today by climbing up to a ridge and hiking along it, passing a ski lift.

PCT Day 54... Swapping Philmont Stories

PCT Day 54... Swapping Philmont Stories

I decided that I was going to go back to waking up at 5:30 am, so I woke up and was completely packed up by 5:50 - a ten minute improvement from normal! I felt 10 times better today, compared to yesterday, after a good night sleep.

PCT Day 53... Desolation Wilderness

PCT Day 53... Desolation Wilderness

I had planned on sleeping in this morning, as I had not been able to go to bed until 10 pm the previous evening - the latest I have been up so far the summer. The plan did not hold up due to a combination of my alarm going off early and others making noise outside the room…

PCT Day 50... Magic Chipmunk

PCT Day 50... Magic Chipmunk

Where there was not snow, there was mud.  We trooped along taking a couple of short breaks to dig cat holes or for me to filter water. As the day progressed, the snow became slushier and I slipped and slid more and more.

PCT Day 47... Psych!

PCT Day 47... Psych!

Today I woke up just a few minutes before my alarm went off and we packed up camp and hit the trail at 5:30 am. It was one pretty day on the trail; we spent the day climbing up and down mountains and crossing two passes. Around the passes were epic mountain lakes.

PCT Day 39... Ascending the Steep Icy Slopes of Pinchot Pass

PCT Day 39... Ascending the Steep Icy Slopes of Pinchot Pass

Oliver, Lucky Hat, and I have found that waking up at 4 am and then getting on the trail by 4:30 works well, since then we only have to use our head lights for about 30 min before it is light enough to see. And so today, we did just that, leaving camp at 4:30 to begin our ascent of Pinchot Pass…

PCT Day 36... Incredible Views Hiking Forester Pass

PCT Day 36... Incredible Views Hiking Forester Pass

Our plan was to set up for getting into town to resupply tomorrow morning. We woke up at 3:30 am to hike over Forester Pass, which is the tallest point on the PCT. It was an icy 4 mile uphill trek to the pass. We hiked by the light of our headlights, until about 5:15 am when there was enough light to see.

PCT Day 33... Break Away, Change, Rooster, and Speedy

PCT Day 33... Break Away, Change, Rooster, and Speedy

I hiked mainly on my own, not seeing any of our group until around 2:00 in the afternoon. I was stopped at a water source, relaxing when Oliver came hiking up. He joined me in filling up water.  He told me that the part of our group that had not made it to camp last night, had stopped about a half mile before, and joined another group who had built a fire.
