Day 29 - 58

PCT Day 58... Across Town & Back Again

PCT Day 58... Across Town & Back Again

At some point during the night, a deer decided to come to hang around my campsite. I woke up several times to the sound of it walking next to my tent. Before leaving camp, I felt the urgent call of nature and grabbed my shovel to answer that call. I started hiking at 6 am and did not stop, but to fill up water, until 2 pm.

PCT Day 56... Bad Dog, Good Dog

PCT Day 56... Bad Dog, Good Dog

The terrain was up and down hills, through wooded areas, reminding me of hiking on the Appalachian Trail. I saw a good number of weekend and section hikers out and as I got close to the road, a lady was walking with her dog, who fortunately was on a leash, barked and snarled at me. I continued and reached the road at 11:30.

PCT Day 55... Will Hike for Food

PCT Day 55... Will Hike for Food

Packing up camp took even less time than yesterday, thanks to not having any tent to pack away. I got out of camp in less than 20 minutes after getting up. I started today by climbing up to a ridge and hiking along it, passing a ski lift.

PCT Day 54... Swapping Philmont Stories

PCT Day 54... Swapping Philmont Stories

I decided that I was going to go back to waking up at 5:30 am, so I woke up and was completely packed up by 5:50 - a ten minute improvement from normal! I felt 10 times better today, compared to yesterday, after a good night sleep.

PCT Day 53... Desolation Wilderness

PCT Day 53... Desolation Wilderness

I had planned on sleeping in this morning, as I had not been able to go to bed until 10 pm the previous evening - the latest I have been up so far the summer. The plan did not hold up due to a combination of my alarm going off early and others making noise outside the room…

PCT Day 52... Gear Swap

PCT Day 52... Gear Swap

I caught a bus up to where I was going to spend the night, while I waited for my backpack to come in. I ran and bought a larger water filter since the old one’s flow rate was so bad. As I was walking to the hostel, I got a message that my backpack had been delivered to the FedEx store

PCT Day 50... Magic Chipmunk

PCT Day 50... Magic Chipmunk

Where there was not snow, there was mud.  We trooped along taking a couple of short breaks to dig cat holes or for me to filter water. As the day progressed, the snow became slushier and I slipped and slid more and more.

PCT Day 49... Glissading Down 200 ft

PCT Day 49... Glissading Down 200 ft

The descent was more interesting; we could either hike around this bowl of ice along the trail or glissade about 200 feet down and bushwhack from there. We choose glissading. Lucky Hat went first and he sped down the ice, not using his ice axe much to slow him.

PCT Day 47... Psych!

PCT Day 47... Psych!

Today I woke up just a few minutes before my alarm went off and we packed up camp and hit the trail at 5:30 am. It was one pretty day on the trail; we spent the day climbing up and down mountains and crossing two passes. Around the passes were epic mountain lakes.

PCT Day 46... Entering Yosemite National Park

PCT Day 46... Entering Yosemite National Park

We started later than normal, sleeping in till 5:30am, before getting packed up. The goal was to get to Toulomne meadows by 9 am since, if the store there is operating, that’s what time it would be open. We had two different people tell us it was open for the season and two others that said it was not.

PCT Day 39... Ascending the Steep Icy Slopes of Pinchot Pass

PCT Day 39... Ascending the Steep Icy Slopes of Pinchot Pass

Oliver, Lucky Hat, and I have found that waking up at 4 am and then getting on the trail by 4:30 works well, since then we only have to use our head lights for about 30 min before it is light enough to see. And so today, we did just that, leaving camp at 4:30 to begin our ascent of Pinchot Pass…
