Today, we left the house around 8:00 am and headed to the Amicalola Falls State Park, the head of the Appalachian Trail. Initially, we thought we had to hike the approach trail which adds 8.8 miles; but lucky for us, there is a road that goes within a mile of trail.
After saying good by to Aunt Sue and Uncle Kim, Kate and I hit the trail. When we arrived to the shelter we are staying, we met two very nice guys - Chief and Dice. Dice was a sobo (southbound). He started hiking last year, took a break for the winter and is 2 days from finishing. He told us about the "Snickers Test." When you are deciding what gear you want to bring, if you would rather have "it's weight in snicker bars, then you probably don't need it." After dinner, Kate and I played cards and are looking forward to getting to a good night's sleep.
