8/4/2019 UPDATE FROM MATTHEW:
SUPPORT NEEDED: LCC K-9 COMFORT DOGS DEPLOYED FOR 2 SHOOTINGS IN 24 HOURS
For the past couple of months, I’ve been hiking the PCT to raise money for K-9 Comfort Dog Ministries. An immediate need for comfort has arisen in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas after the recent shootings.
My grandfather, Rev. Dr. Heimer Karl, and my uncle, Rev. Stephen Heimer, are collaborating with LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs to respond to the tragedy in El Paso. From my home church in Austin, TX, Rev. Martin Danner with Bethany Lutheran Church is assisting the deploying arrangements for this area.
I ask you to support the K-9 Comfort Dog Ministries Travel Expense Fund.
Matthew’s Goal for Hiking the Pacific Crest Trail:
Matthew’s goal is to raise funds and spread awareness of the exceptional work LLC K-9 Comfort Dog ministry accomplishes through his hike on the Pacific Crest Trail this summer.
The Comfort Dogs serve every day in the communities in which they are placed. When invited, they are also deployed in times of disaster and crisis to bring comfort to all those affected, including first responders and the volunteers who serve them.
Why Comfort Dogs?
Matthew first learned about LCC K-9 Comfort Dog Ministries through his church, Bethany Lutheran, in Austin, Texas. His CIA (Compassion in Action) summer program helped raised general funds for LCC, and then more recently Bethany was able to sponsor two Comfort Dogs of their own, Martha and Abner.
Costs of a Comfort Dog’s training and supplies
There are many factors that go into the training of a Comfort Dog—most importantly, how long it takes—which could be between 12-18 months, depending upon the dog’s readiness which is different with every dog. You can imagine what 2,000 hours of training, veterinary, food, supplies and daily care costs for even one comfort dog. Once a Comfort Dog is placed at a church, costs include a dog’s continued care and training, plus the travel expenses for anytime they are invited to deploy with their team to a crisis or disaster anywhere in the US. That said, LCC never charges those they serve!
