Tuesday: For the most part, I was able to relax today. I started to unpack all of my gear, and I realized for the first time, just how bad everything smelled. I could not smell it when I was on the trail, but after my nose adjusted to an environment where most everyone takes a shower once a day, the smell was quite obvious.
I am glad to be home, where I don't have to pack everything up each morning, and I can take a shower every day - twice if I want to. The only thing that hurts now is my feet, which are still very sore. I don't think they really agreed with the 2,200 miles.
Max and I got up at 4:55 am to a star-filled sky at the base of Mt. Katahdin. Mom and Dad were going to pick us up at 5:15 am to head to Boston. So Max and I packed up our tent and sleeping bags as quick as we could. We were right on time to our meeting point and they were early. We headed out of Baxter State Park, which was about an hour drive as the road was a single lane gravel track.
The day started at 4:30 am. We packed up all the luggage and headed back to Abol Bridge. Bonnie, Kate, Max, Jonathan, and my Dad were all joining me for the final hike up Mt. Katahdin. While Joshua stayed back at the cabin sleeping, my Mom dropped us off at the trailhead at 5:15 am. We needed to hike 10 miles to the base of Mt. Katahdin before 10 am in order to register for our hike up the mountain.
